“An Audience with . . .”
June 28, 2011
Read Construction were delighted to receive an invitation to a Motivational Workshop at the Coedpoeth Plas Pentwyn Centre, organised by Careers Wales North East to encourage year 10 students from Wrexham schools to develop their skills, attitudes and values for future working life.
Attending mentors hailed from manufacturing, army, nursing, professional sport and several other walks of life, all with a view of giving a wide selection of professional opinions on career development. Read’s Health, Environmental, Safety & Resources Administrator, Mr Iolo Rhys, was present on behalf of the company and the construction industry.
The event was divided into two halves; the first half gave the students the opportunity to question mentors on their careers, any valuable lessons learnt along the way and understand prospects and progression patterns - the second half utilised exercises to prepare the students for interviews, and improve personal and professional behaviour by highlighting the skills and personal qualities that employers look for in candidates.
Read are proud to be supporting the local community at such events, raising the awareness of students to the possibility of work in the construction industry, and aiding their preparation for the wider world.
“I'm so grateful that you were able to join us yesterday for our Morning Workshop “An Audience with....” and glad you enjoyed the session. The feedback from the pupils was extremely positive and encouraging - they told us that they found the input of the guest mentors very relevant, interesting, friendly and informative. This style of workshop helps students to develop their communication and self presentation skills and can improve their confidence and self-esteem. We really value the involvement of employers like Read Construction.
When “real” employees like yourself take part and share your own work focused experiences, it helps young people to understand better what skills and personal qualities employers want. Your participation motivates and encourages young people to overcome their own barriers to learning and helps them promote responsibility for their own personal development. It gives them insights into your job role and helps them to understand the prospects and progression patterns in a range of jobs in which they may be interested, (or gives students exposure to other job fields which they may not have not had exposure to). The information given to the pupils is essential to help them prepare for their Work Experience and to help them develop their skills, attitudes and values for future working life.
Thank you once again for your time, experience and support - it is very much appreciated and of great benefit to these students.”
