Building of ambitious £1.2m AMD eye-care unit at Countess of Chester begins
July 01, 2009A NERVE-WRACKING operation to kick-start the building of specialist eye-care facilities in Chester has been deemed a success.
The £1.2m AMD Unit at the Countess of Chester Hospital will soon provide treatment to those suffering from severe visual disabilities.
Structures for the unit, some weighing three tonnes, were constructed in a factory and then lifted by a 100 tonne crane over the walls of the existing hospital and safely into position.
The large-scale operation was undertaken by Read Construction Holdings, which has completed £4.4m of projects in four years at the Countess.
MD Richard Heaton said: "The site is a challenging one as the unit occupies one of the enclosed quadrangles within the existing building and the only access is through the busy hospital."
