Mere works on track for Easter opening
March 09, 2009Work at the mere in Ellesmere is on target to be finished for Easter, with alterations at the Boathouse Restaurant entering the final phase.
Ellesmere Town Councillors welcomed the news at their monthly meeting held last week, when they heard how developments were going smoothly, with the completion date still set for Easter.
The eagerly awaited £2.1M development includes the refurbishment and merging of the Visitors Centre and the Boathouse Restaurant, which has been closed since October 2007.
Ian Hughes from contractors Read, said "Despite the recent spell of extremely cold weather which hampered many tasks, works to the Mere are progressing well. The promenade is nearing completion with the final decorative finish to be laid in early February, weather permitting.
Final Phase
Also, after lengthy structural stabilisation works, the Boathouse Restaurant is entering its final finishing phase, with carparks being prepared and decorative finishes currently ongoing internally."
Other work taking place as part of the development include resurfacing and widening of the promenade, avenue and new shrub bed planting, upgrading of park furniture and a new waters edge path to run from the restaurant to the promenade.
Improvements are also being made to the entrances and access at Cremorne Gardens, some tree and vegetation material has been removed to open up views accross the mere, the play area will also be enhanced with the addition of an adventure garden at the old tennis court.
Further improvements include car park resurfacing and the marking out of bays to maximise space, an additional picnic area will also be created in the overflow car park.
