Top Construction Manager Site Safety

Top Construction Manager Site Safety

A Wrexham man is celebrating after he was named the top Site Manager in the North West for Health and Safety, on his 50th birthday. Paul Kelly of Read Construction Holdings Ltd of Brymbo scooped the prestigious award, beating over 380 other sites in the North West and was praised for his ‘exceptional commitment’ to the health and safety of workers on his sites.

The award, which includes a cheque for £100, is made annually by the Building Services Group which administers over 2,200 sites in the UK where an average of 70 deaths per year occur on construction sites. In the current economic climate where companies are considering their overheads and costs, health and safety inevitably comes under the spotlight.

“Over 380 sites were reviewed by the judges, who considered that Paul demonstrated an exceptional commitment to maintaining the highest standards of health and safety on his site. This represents a very considerable achievement on his part.” Said Michael Setter, Chairman of the Building Services Group. “I also believe that a site manager cannot win this award without the active support of the company and Read Construction Holdings Ltd are to be congratulated on developing a very proactive health and safety culture within the company.” Explained Mr Setter.

Read Managing Director Richard Heaton welcomed the recognition for both the company and Mr Kelly as an individual. “We are delighted that both Paul’s and Read’s success have been recognised; this is, indeed, a significant achievement and acknowledges Read’s commitment both to the development of our people and our systems which deliver best practice health and safety throughout the business.”

For Paul Kelly it is a significant accolade after 32 years in the building industry; 18 of them with Read and came on another significant milestone – his 50th birthday. “I am proud to accept this award on behalf of everyone at Read and take the opportunity to thank the management for their commitment to developing all their supervisory personnel and operatives and of course, everyone who works under my supervision.” Said Mr Kelly. “I would also like to thank Andrew Parry of the BSG for his help and guidance over the years inspecting my sites and also our H & S co-ordinator Pam Manley. Without their help this award would not have been possible.”

For Pam Manley, Health and Safety co-ordinator for Read, Paul Kelly’s award is cause for real celebration. “I have known Paul for some 15 years now and still, after all this time, he reminds me of that student in the classroom we have all come across, the one that sticks his hand up to answer every question and bobs up and down in his seat with enthusiasm. If I had to choose a few words to sum him up they would be ‘enthusiastic’, ‘consistent’ and ‘committed’. Consistency has paid off for him at last. Well done.”
